The Danish deal aggregator Bownty recently announced that they have acquired the popular deal site Cityscoop, which has been operating in 21 cities around Denmark since February 2011.
Cleaning up the daily deal market
Earlier this year, Bownty received 0,5m euro from SEED Capital with the intention to clean up the deal market. Since late 2010, when the daily deal industry really boomed in Denmark, over 15 daily deal sites have opened its doors to online shoppers.
CEO of Bownty, Steffen W. Frølund explains the recent acquisition: “People have had plenty of time to fall in love with the concept of using daily deals. But now it is high time to make the service truly spectacular. This means making sure that buying and using daily deals is as smooth a process as possible for daily deal hunters.”
A smarter Cityscoop, a smarter Bownty
Though details about acquiring Cityscoop have not been published, it is known that Cityscoop will cease to send out new deals in the future and will continue to operate as part of Bownty instead. CEO of Bownty, Steffen W. Frølund says that Bownty does not necessarily aim to acquire more deal sites in the near future, since with Cityscoop it was a case of mutual interest to collaborate in the competitive daily deal industry.
Bownty will not be negotiating and selling their own deals, but the loyal Cityscoop users will simply gain access to a lot more deals than ever before on Bownty.
